ApeCoin, which trades under the ticker APE, is a crypto asset that represents a project and community aimed at harnessing blockchain technology for cultural advancement. APE is an ERC-20 token (a type of token running on the Ethereum blockchain), with a portion of its supply gifted to particular nonfungible token (NFT) holders. 

What is ApeCoin (APE)?

ApeCoin launched in March 2022. Holders of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFTs could collect an allotment of APE tokens in the first half of 2022 based on which and how many of the two NFTs they held. Holding a BAYC NFT entitled the holder to a larger amount of APE than holding a MAYC NFT. Holding a Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC) NFT in tandem with a BAYC or MAYC NFT also affected the amount of APE the holder could claim. 

ApeCoin’s ecosystem is led by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) called the ApeCoin DAO. ApeCoin holders have the ability to be DAO members, granting them the power to have a say in ecosystem matters. The APE Foundation also exists to support the ApeCoin ecosystem, as well as carry out actions decided upon by the ApeCoin DAO. 

Regarding ApeCoin’s total supply, the ApeCoin project asserts that APE has a capped supply of 1 billion, with no ability to create further APE tokens or burn existing ones. The NFT holders mentioned above as a whole could claim a total of 15% of the 1 billion supply.
