Bollinger began his early career working as a cinematographer. He then became an independent trader and later the chief market analyst of the Financial News Network, where he presented technical analysis on television. This led him to become a technical analyst, and in 1980, he developed the Bollinger Bands indicator. Bollinger has written several books on technical analysis and is a regular contributor to financial publications.

He founded Bollinger Capital Management, a research and investment management firm. He is also both a chartered market technician (CMT) and chartered financial analyst (CFA) and is the first analyst to earn both designations. Bollinger is a well-known figure in the financial world, and traders around the globe use his technical indicator. His work has helped shape modern technical analysis, and he is respected due to his expertise during market volatility.
